Between Chile's extreme landscapes to the north (Atacama) and south (Patagonia) lies the verdant Lakes District, a region awash with sparkling alpine lakes and wild rivers, snowy volcanoes, hidden hot springs and largely untouched National Parks that beg to be explored. Swiss-born Michael Paravicini fell under the area's spell during trips to Chile as a child and in 2014, he and his wife Claudia fulfilled a lifelong dream with Hacienda Hotel Vira Vira, which they designed and constructed from the ground.  Just 20 minutes from Pucón, the exceptional Relais & Châteaux property sits along the shores of the Liucura River, surrounded by wilderness, and provides lucky guests with true immersion in the region, coined 'The Elegance of Adventure.'  Every single detail has been carefully curated by Michael and Claudia; from the herd of Holstein cows that supply milk for the hotel's three-year-aged Parmesan, to the exhaustive list of expertly guided regional explorations, to the locally crafted Mapuche-inspired decor, each aspect of the Vira Vira experience is intentional and extraordinary.

It is only a one hour flight from Santiago to Temuco, follwoed by a one hour ground transfer.  Those looking to save money and maximize daylight hours can take an overnight lie-flat sleeper bus from Santiago (8 hours) and arrive right into Pucon in the morning.

For travelers coming from or carrying on to Torres del Paine National Park - Vira Vira offers a compelling reason for travelers to break up the long journey in either direction. Unique Arrival & Departure Options:

WHEN TO VISIT

Vira Vira is open year-round and each season brings spectacular natural scenery as well as a varied array of outdoor adventures. Chile's seasons are opposite of North America's.

Spring (September-November) temperatures range from 50°-55 °F (10°- 13°C) on average. Fishing season begins in November and white water rafting and kayaking are at their most exciting as rivers swell with snow melt from the mountains. Depending on snow conditions, skiing on the slopes of nearby Villarrica Volcano may be possible. This is also an especially fun time to visit the farm and observe the abundance of newborn animals.

Summer (December-February) stays relatively cool and pleasant with an average temperature of 63°F (17°C). Hiking, mountain biking and all manner of water pursuits are especially enjoyable this time of year. This is also when most travelers from North America venture to Chile to try and catch Patagonia's slim good weather window and thus the busiest time of year.

Autumn (March-May) is in our opinion, an excellent time to visit. Brilliant colors transform the deciduous forests; fishing season winds down but conditions are typically still excellent for horseback riding, hiking and cycling excursions. Temperatures drop a bit into the mid 50s and the daily chance of rain increases as Fall trends towards winter.

Winter (June-August) in Chile's Lakes District is magical if you don't mind a bit of precipitation.  Though snow rarely falls at the lodge, the surrounding volcanoes are coated with fresh powder, creating the perfect playground for skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers. Take a lift and glide down the lower slops of the volcano, or ski tour with an expert guide for a summit ski descent from the top of Volcano Villarrica.

FOR FAMILIES

Vira Vira welcomes children of 12 years old and up.  Vira Vira is a fantastic base camp from which to explore the remarkable Lakes District. An in-house guide staff offers personalized adventures for younger explorers, complete with a toy chest full of the best bikes, kayaks, fly fishing gear, rafting, skiing and riding equipment.

RECOMMENDED LENGTH OF STAY

Though you can stay for just 1 night, 3-4 nights are suggested to dip a toe in the region and take advantage of the variety of activities and excursions, as well as the varied culinary delights that emerge from the kitchen with each meal.   Guests should devote at least one day to the area's incredible rivers, either by white water rafting, taking an easier float trip or casting a fly rod for trout and salmon.  When you consider that Vira Vira is surrounded by no fewer than 5 national parks and 3 national reserves which offer world class trekking, climbing, ski touring, horse back riding, fishing and mountain biking, a week barely seems enough time to adequately explore the region.

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS

Menu items are produced right on Vira Vira's own farm or sourced from the surrounding rivers and forests.  The farm consists of a full organic garden, beehives, a creamery for producing fresh milk, cream, yogurt and cheese and an Austrian grain mill for grinding their own grains for fresh-baked bread. Guests can join Michael or the chef and participate in the daily hacienda tasks of food procurement and production.

Michael's uncle is David Hess, so you could say his passion for wine is somewhat genetic. He has proudly assembled Vira Vira's all-Chilean premium wine list and selects each evening's dinner pairings.

Unlike many other all-inclusive properties that have only a set menu of daily small-group excursions, Vira Vira has an in-house team of top-notch guides who work one-on-one with guests to customize their daily adventures and experiences. If you can dream it, the guides at Vira Vira can make it happen!

Hike among forests of ancient araucarias (also called monkey puzzle trees), living fossils that date back to the Mesozoic Era.  The flora and fauna surrounding Vira Vira will dazzle botanists, birders and naturalists.

After a long day, gaze at the southern constellations while soaking in one of the wood-fired hot tubs nestled throughout the property, or take a Hatha yoga class from Claudia, who loves to share her practice with guests through private or small-group sessions.

The river's surrounding Vira Vira offer some of the best white water and fly fishing in the world. White water rafting, kayaking, float trips and guided fly fishing are all available from the hacienda, and water-based adventures contrast nicely with the trekking-focused excursions that most travelers embark on in Patagonia.

Michael and Claudia Paravicini live on site, and their love for Vira Vira, the surrounding nature and their genuine passion to provide each guest with a unique and exceptional experience is evident in all that they do.

BEST COMBINED WITH

Vira Vira combines well as part of a longer journey through Chile, particularly the Patagonia region of Chile and/or Argentina, the Argentine Lakes District, or as a retreat after a business trip to Santiago.  The culinary and wine focus of Vira Vira also works well as an add-on to a trip through Chile's wine country if travelers are amenable to taking in-country flights.
