La Casona “The Home” at Matetic Vineyards is a 10-bedroom boutique hotel conveniently located one hour east of Santiago, situated in the Rosario Valley between the Casablanca and San Antonio Valleys. Built in the early 1900s, La Casona served as the main house of the estate. In 2004 the original building was renovated into a boutique hotel, which makes it feel like you’re stepping into a chapter of the region’s history. Upon arrival at the hotel, you’ll notice a massive Chilean Wine Palm—a national natural heritage species. These endangered palms are as old as the estate, often reaching 3-6 feet in diameter and 60-80 feet in height. A spectacular entry!
This region of Chile became particularly popular for vineyards around 1999, but prior to that (and still) the region remains an important hub for agriculture due to its unique geography. At one of the highest peaks of the property, guests are able to see the Pacific Ocean, with views of the snow-capped Andes on the other side. Seeing this view inevitably makes you realize how unique the country of Chile is, and how lucky they are to have access to mountains, fertile agriculture lands, and the ocean.
One thing that sets La Casona at Matetic Vineyards apart from others in the region is their sustainability efforts. Their vineyard was the first in Chile to adopt organic and biodynamic practices, ensuring that the land is not only a viable resource for producing wine, but also for protecting wildlife. In fact, the 50,000 acres of land at Matetic Vineyard have become a hub for wildlife. While enjoying a bike ride, hike, or horseback ride on the property, guests are likely to see a plethora of birds such as owls and giant hummingbirds, rabbits, fox, and other endemic creatures. There is no doubt that visiting La Casona at Matetic Vineyards is a great choice to the beginning or ending of any Chile itinerary.

WHEN TO VISIT
La Casona at Matetic Vineyards is a wonderful year-round destination thanks to the temperate weather found in the Mediterranean climate of the Rosario Valley. Summer temperatures, from November-March, can get hot during the day, but remain cool and refreshing at night. Sunrise is at 6:00am and sunset at 9:00pm during these months. For those exploring Chile in the winter, from May-August, the region can be chilly, but still warm enough during the day. Sunrise is at 9:00am and sunset is 6:00pm during the winter months.
FOR FAMILIES
La Casona at Matetic Vineyards welcomes guests of all ages, making it especially family-friendly. While the minimum age to check in without a parent or guardian is 18, children are welcome to stay and can enjoy specialized activities, including juice tasting while adults enjoy wine, alongside available children's menus. Keep in mind that if paired with another one of our South American properties (such as Patagonia Camp), age restrictions may be in place.
RECOMMENDED LENGTH OF STAY
The minimum stay is two nights, but we think three allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the unique Rosario Valley wine region and enjoy all that La Casona has to offer.
UNIQUE SELLING POINTS
Most of the popular vineyard hotels are located 3-4 hours away from Santiago airport. The convenient location of La Casona at Matetic Vineyards makes it even more enjoyable.
Matetic Vineyards is hyper-focused on sustainability, so the 50,000-acre property has become an area where birds and native animals feel safe to roam. They also are preserving several endangered Chilean Wine Palm Trees that are over 100 years old.
The organic and biodynamic wine experience at Matetic Vineyards takes centerstage of any visit. Guests are invited to partake in the Biodynamic Tour on the property which includes a Sensory Trail, Biodynamic Garden, and visit to the Wine Cellar—culminating of course in a guided tasting of their award-winning Corralillo and EQ wines.
Those who crave more than just wine tasting will be delighted with La Casona’s tour book, which includes mountain biking, hiking to panoramic lookouts and along biodiverse trails, horseback riding through the vineyards, and more.
On the property, you can see massive 100+ gallon wooden barrels where wine was previously stored. Now, the wine is made in a beautiful industrial building that will blow your mind. It is an absolute must-visit for anyone who is interested in wine.
The property’s restaurant, Equilibrio, is outstanding. It is widely recognized as one of the top winery restaurants in Chile, while not feeling overly fancy or pretentious. The menu is teeming with local and seasonal produce and meat, fitting with the sustainable approach of the rest of the property.
Sometimes all you need at the end of a trip is an excellent pool…Matetic Vineyards is well-equipped with their guest-only pool space and lounge area.
The Matetic Family owns the land of Patagonia Camp (80,000 acres) and Estancia Cerro Guido (200,000 acres). Even though these hotels are in completely different geographical locations, the experience at La Casona feels similar for a few reasons. The hospitality experience is excellent across the board, and all of these properties have become a safe-haven for wildlife due to the owner’s conscious planning to ensure that the land is properly preserved, despite having a hotel and winery operations on site.
BEST COMBINED WITH
What makes La Casona at Matetic Vineyards so special is its convenient one-hour drive to Santiago International Airport. You don’t have to go through downtown Santiago in order to get there, so traffic is minimal and the views along the drive are spectacular. As a result it is the absolute perfect beginning or ending to any Chilean itinerary (though Turney’s tip is to visit at the end of your itinerary). It’s a great place to “wine-down” and reflect on your journey, while getting to experience some amazing wine tasting experiences and wildlife. Of course, you don’t want to miss out on the pool, either!
