There is lesser-known Peru, and then there is Tinajani Canyon. Introducing the newest property by Andean: Tinajani in Southern Peru. This exclusive tented camp takes advantage of one of Peru’s least visited natural wonders, the Tinajani Canyon. A beautiful natural canyon sometimes compared to the American Southwest, this area is rich in Andean cultural significance and modern outdoor exploration. At 3,895 meters (12,900 feet) above sea level, this is Andean’s highest property—which lends even more ambiance to the surreal natural sandstone towers and arches along the Tinajani River. It is no surprise that this area holds significant spiritual meaning for the local Quechua people, and guests of Tinajani have the opportunity to be visitors in this mystical energy and even participate in traditional ceremonies during their stay.
Aside from the beauty of the surrounding landscape, there are pre-Inca and Inca cultural sites scattered throughout the region, ample hiking trails, and cycling routes to explore. The best part is that this is truly one of the least known areas of Southern Peru, drawing a stark contrast to the crowds of Machu Picchu or Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain).
As the fourth installment of the Southern Travesia crafted by Andean that includes sister properties PUQIO, Titilaka, and CIRQA, Tinajani is an ideal destination for travelers seeking a one-of-a-kind overnight before or after Machu Picchu. Only a four-hour drive from the main square in Cusco, Tinajani allows guests to skip the flight from Cusco to Juliaca in favor of a slower, more immersive experience of Southern Peru.

Tinajani is only one hour 45 minutes from Juliaca (JUL). Transfers are available but the real beauty of the Southern Travesia that Andean has built is that Tinajani eliminates the need for so much air travel, instead leaning into the slower pace of a more immersive road trip from Cusco to Tinajani, and then on to PUQIO or Titilaka.
Tinajani is designed to be experienced by road trip, beginning in Cusco perhaps after a journey to Machu Picchu. Four and a half hours away from Cusco’s main square, travelers will be welcomed into the red rock canyon of Tinajani in one of the least visited regions of Peru. From there, guests may continue four hours in either direction to sister properties PUQIO or Titilaka, and can even extend on to CIRQA in Arequipa.
All transfers are arranged by the Andean team and feature spacious and comfortable vehicles with English-speaking guides and lunches, refreshments, and snacks (depending on the length and timing of the journey).
Unique Arrival & Departure Options:
WHEN TO VISIT
Tinajani sits at 3,895 meters (12,900 feet) above sea level, making it Andean’s highest property. For comparison, Titilaka is at 12,500 feet, Cusco is 11,150 feet, and Machu Picchu is 7,970 feet. In the gold season from May to October, sunny days and crisp nights make for beautiful autumnal hues, while the green season from November to April transforms the region into a lush grassland zone. Despite these different seasons, due to the elevation, the Andean climate here is cool and dry for much of the year.
Daytime temperatures can reach up to 66˚ F ( 19˚ C) during the gold season, with nighttime lows dropping as low as 28˚ F (-2˚ C). Although the accommodations at Tinajani are canvas tents, they are well-insulated with high-tech heaters as well as authentic wood-burning stoves to keep any possible chill at bay. There is no sense of camping or roughing it while at any of Andean’s tented properties.
FOR FAMILIES
Children of all ages are welcome at Tinajani, although there is no specific programming for young travelers. Tinajani provides a unique natural setting that encourages kids to get off their phones and explore the great outdoors, and as always at Andean, there are excursions of different lengths and difficulties so that parents can choose the best outing for their family.
RECOMMENDED LENGTH OF STAY
The minimum suggested stay at Tinajani is one night, however two to three nights are ideal.
It is highly encouraged that visitors spend at least two nights in Arequipa or Cusco to acclimate before overnighting at the higher altitude (12,900 feet) of Tinajani.
UNIQUE SELLING POINTS
In today’s climate of increasingly popular, Instagram-worthy canvas tents, Andean raises the bar with the ultimate in luxury tented accommodations. Each of the six Campamentos at Tinajani include an accommodation tent, rest tent, private bathroom, hot tub, wood stove, and private terrace—making it much more of a private tented palace than a standard glamping tent.
Even more off-the-grid than the Colca Canyon, Tinajani Canyon is the ideal destination in Southern Peru for travelers who have already seen the main tourist sights and want to add somewhere exciting and novel to their travel roster.
An ideal destination for nature and geology lovers, Tinajani is a supremely peaceful setting that invites visitors to spend hours exploring the landscape by foot and bike. The property itself consists of over 395 acres which means that every excursion will maintain this level of exclusivity and privacy, with no other tourists to contend with.
Guests of Tinajani have the opportunity to participate in an Andean Rebirth Ceremony, guided by a local shaman. This is a special opportunity for travelers who are intrigued by the spiritual aspects of South America but want to make sure they support authentic practices while giving back to local communities at the same time.
One of the premier stargazing destinations in the Andes thanks to its high elevation and remote setting, Tinajani is a noteworthy dark sky destination that allows everyone from amateur stargazers to actual astronomers unparalleled views of the night sky.
